How a solid floor is nailed down

A solid floor is a stack of tongue-and-groove boards fastened through the tongue to a wood subfloor, usually over a layer of felt or paper that keeps squeaks down.

  1. Joists and subfloor. Plywood or boards over joists, flat within the maker's limit.
  2. Felt or paper. A thin sheet that reduces squeaks and slows moisture.
  3. Solid boards. Fastened with a pneumatic nailer at an angle through the tongue.
  4. Finish. Sanded and coated on site, or factory finished.

How a solid hardwood floor is nailed down. A solid floor is nailed through the tongue of each board into a wood subfloor, over a layer of felt that cuts squeaks. The finish is the thinnest layer and the first to wear.

What the numbers show

  1. Joists The framing that carries the floor; on a raised foundation they sit above a crawlspace.
  2. Plywood subfloor The flat base the boards are nailed to; it has to be dry and flat within the maker's limit.
  3. Felt paper A thin sheet that reduces squeaks and slows moisture from below.
  4. Solid boards Tongue-and-groove boards nailed at an angle through the tongue
  5. Finish The coat that takes the wear; it is renewed by a recoat or a sanding.

Plank width and species

Narrow strips of 2¼ in. are the classic Torrance look and match a lot of 1950s oak floors, which is useful when a new room has to meet an old one. Wider boards of 5 in. or more show the grain and a few more seasonal gaps. Red oak, white oak, maple and hickory are the common choices; grain and hardness differ, and the stain page has a visualizer.

Solid Hardwood Installation — common questions

Can solid hardwood be installed over a slab?

Not directly. It needs a plywood layer or sleepers, and an engineered floor is usually the easier choice on a slab.

How long can a solid floor last?

Solid hardwood can last for decades with care, and it can usually be sanded and refinished several times. Nothing here is a promise about a specific floor.

Bookings aren't open yet — a typical Torrance range in about 30 seconds.

Step 1 Range —
    Which floor is it?

Install a new floor, refinish or repair an existing one, or a business or rental floor.

    How big is the floor?

Typical: an open main floor, about 600 square feet.

Measure wall to wall; length × width in feet gives the square feet.

    Which floor or service?

Typical: engineered standard plank, the most common new floor in slab-on-grade homes.

What is under the new floor?

Typical: wood subfloor. If it is a slab, the installer picks glue-down or floating.

    Anything to remove first?

Typical: carpet and pad, the floor most older Torrance homes have on top.

    Anything extra? optional

Skip if none apply; a moisture test follows any slab.

    How big is the floor?

Typical: an open main floor, about 600 square feet.

    Which floor or service?

Typical: sand and refinish, natural color.

What condition is the floor in? pick all that apply

Pick every line that fits; good condition adds nothing.

    Anything extra? optional

Skip if none apply; a drying wait only follows water damage.

What kind of property is it?

Pick the floor that carries the most traffic.

    How big is the floor?

Length × width in feet, or the square feet. Typical: 1,500 sq ft.

    Which floor or service?

Typical: a maintenance recoat on a floor still in good shape.

What condition is the floor in? pick all that apply

    Pick every line that fits.

When can the work happen? optional

Typical: after hours or on a weekend. No price change.

    Anything extra? optional

    Skip if none apply.

    Notes and photos optional

Optional: a short note, such as the number of stairs or a water stain.
