What it is

A screen and recoat, also called a buff and coat, dulls the surface with a fine abrasive screen on a buffer, cleans off the dust, and applies a fresh coat of finish. It refreshes the finish without sanding to bare wood.

Diagram: two board sections, on the left a new coat over the lightly scuffed old finish, on the right the board sanded through the old finish into fresh wood with new coats
Screen and recoat versus a full sanding. A recoat adds finish without touching the wood; a sanding removes the finish and a little wood.

What the numbers show

  1. Old finish A recoat keeps it and only scuffs the top so the new coat can bond.
  2. New coat One fresh coat over the old finish; no wood is removed.
  3. Removed layer A full sanding cuts through the old finish into the wood.
  4. New finish on bare wood Stain, if any, and new coats go on the freshly sanded wood.

When a recoat is enough, and when it fails

Situation Recoat?
Dull, light scratches in the finish Yes
Floor has never been waxed or polished with oil soap or silicone products Yes
Wear through to bare wood in traffic paths No, needs sanding
Deep scratches, gouges or pet stains in the wood No
Old wax or polish Often no; a new finish may not bond
Color change wanted No

A small test patch shows whether a coat bonds before the whole floor is done.

Timing

A recoat often takes about a day, with the finish maker's times for walking and furniture. It is a good option for a rental between tenants or a condo where noise and dust are a concern.

What a recoat typically costs in Torrance

Floor size Screen and recoat, good condition
300 sq ft $600–$1,200
600 sq ft $1,200–$2,400
1,000 sq ft $2,000–$4,000

One extra finish coat is a flat option, $250–$900 for a whole floor. A published Los Angeles recoat range runs about $1–$2.50 per sq ft, and the calculator uses a slightly higher South Bay band. Market estimates, not quotes.

Step 1 Range —
    Which floor is it?

Install a new floor, refinish or repair an existing one, or a business or rental floor.

    How big is the floor?

Typical: an open main floor, about 600 square feet.

Measure wall to wall; length × width in feet gives the square feet.

    Which floor or service?

Typical: engineered standard plank, the most common new floor in slab-on-grade homes.

What is under the new floor?

Typical: wood subfloor. If it is a slab, the installer picks glue-down or floating.

    Anything to remove first?

Typical: carpet and pad, the floor most older Torrance homes have on top.

    Anything extra? optional

Skip if none apply; a moisture test follows any slab.

    How big is the floor?

Typical: sand and refinish, natural color.
