What dustless means and does not mean

"Dustless" is a search term and a sales word. Sanding wood makes fine dust, and wood dust is on California's Proposition 65 list. Many refinishers use sanders connected to a vacuum system that captures most of the dust; some fine dust still settles, so rooms are closed off and cleaned afterward.

Vendor claims for capture run from 95% to 99.8%, and no sanding process is truly dust-free. A consumer testing group noted the same.

What containment looks like

  1. Sander with a hose. The machine and the edger are connected to a vacuum.
  2. Sealed room. Plastic sheeting on doorways and over vents and returns.
  3. Floor-level vacuuming between grits.
  4. Final cleaning. Surfaces in the room are wiped or vacuumed afterward.

Safe practice also includes hearing and eye protection and a dust mask for the person sanding.

Questions to ask a contractor

  • Is the sander itself connected to a vacuum, and is the edger?
  • Are vents and doorways sealed, and with what?
  • What is cleaned afterward, and how many times?
  • Is the cost different from a standard sanding?

What it costs in Torrance

No South Bay source lists a separate premium for vacuum-connected sanding, so the calculator does not add one. The usual sand and refinish rates apply: about $5–$8 per sq ft natural, $3,000–$4,800 for 600 sq ft. A quote should say what the dust-control system is.

Step 1 Range —
    Which floor is it?

Install a new floor, refinish or repair an existing one, or a business or rental floor.

    How big is the floor?

Typical: an open main floor, about 600 square feet.
